Lesson 7:
High Contrast Black & White

(40 points)

Where will I turn in my work?

  • Turn your final edited photos into appropriate period's "High Contrast Photos" folder on the Photo Server

Photo Requirements:

  • Put the two attached sample photos "Gradient Mapping 1" & "Gradient Mapping 2" through the tutorial

  • 2 of your own photos that have been put through the attached tutorial

Step-by-Step Instructions:

  1. Read through the tutorial below before beginning the assignment.

  2. Follow along with the tutorial using the photos attached below called Gradient Mapping 1 and Gradient Mapping 2.

  3. When you are done these photos in to the server.  You are halfway through with this assignment!

  4. Go take at least 2 photos of your own that you can use to put through the High Contrast tutorial.  Any subject will work for this assignment, but keep in mind that having a well exposed photo with glossy whites and velvety blacks is key to success for this assignment!

  5. Put your best 2 photos through the high contrast tutorial process. (PRO TIP: Open all three photos at once in Photoshop and complete each step on all three photos one at a time, before moving on to the next step.  This way you only have to read the tutorial once!). Keep in mind that the values used in the sample photos are not exact values! Your needs and numbers will vary slightly depending on the photo you are working with.

  6. Turn your photo in on the Photo Server. Be sure to follow proper naming protocol so your file is titled "Last Name _ First Name _Contrast_1" with the file extension .tif
